Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
