European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
