Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
